Dog Photography in Edinburgh by Blue Sky Photography

Just like children, we believe you can never love a dog too much.

Your dog is the one who is there for you always. Dogs give everything. And while some of us may be privileged enough to have more than one dog in our lifetime, most dogs will only have one human family.

The relationship you have with your dog is so unique and as storytellers we want to capture everything that you see when you look at your four-legged friend. From the cute side-eye, to the alert ears, to the head tipped slightly to the side because they are hanging on your every word. Those details are important to us because they’re important to you.

We’ll take time to find out what makes your fur baby special and what matters to you.

Book a Discovery Call

It’s a chilled chat (on the phone or in person if you fancy a cuppa) where we get to know more about you and your furry friend. We’re dog-daft so love hearing all your unique story of what brought your pet into your life and why you want to celebrate them now with a photography experience.
Basically you’ll talk, we’ll listen and then together we’ll create the photography experience that suits you, your dog and the space in your home where you’d love to display your artwork.

02

Experience

The day of the photography experience is time for you and your dog. The studio will be prepared for you in advance, so it’s time to slow down and let the magic happen. We’ll capture the images that matter and those perfect paw and nose details that you love so much. Because we’ve chatted in advance we’ll know (literally) what we’re shooting for so we can take the photographs we know you’ll love.

03

Design

This is the exciting moment when you get to see the photographs you’ve imagined for the first time. We invite you back to the studio and you get to sit in our lounge and view all on the big screen. This is where you pick your photographs for the space you’ve already imagined. Again because we’ve chatted in advance we’ll have an idea of the products you love. This is all about selecting your favourite images.

04

Cherish

You will live with artwork that celebrates that connection every day. A reminder that you are loved unconditionally and that your dog is at the centre of your home. It’s hard to define how important this will be to you, especially as the years go on. (Quote from client)

Dog photography frequently asked questions

It depends on what age your puppy arrives with you. We are happy to photography them when they first arrive, or a few weeks in when you feel they’re more settled. We’ll chat with you in advance to find out what’s best for you and your puppy.

As with all things important the time is now. If you’re thinking about having professional dog portraits for your home please do not put this off. We have heard too many heart-breaking stories of families who wished they’d captured the essence of their beloved pet before they become too infirm. If your dog is already poorly then just get in touch and let us know and we can adapt a photography session around them and their needs.

We are a small studio and can only take on a limited number of bookings. If Blue Sky Photography is the one for you and your dog, then please book in as soon as possible. We’ll always work with you around grooming appointments so we can photograph your dog exactly as you love to see them (for some clients this immediately after a groom, for others it’s a week or two after – a lot of this also depends on the breed)

We would always say allow an hour or so. This allows time for your dog to come in and become familiar with the studio. We have plenty of space in the Blue Sky Photography studio and we always allow breaks, especially for more nervous dogs. We we can spoil you with a top-notch coffee or cup of tea (the added bonus of coming to the studio is that we take our coffee and tea game very seriously) and of course we have a lovely water bowl for your four-legged friend.

Make sure your dog has a decent medium-sized walk before the photography session. You know your dog and you know what they need. A walk before hand means they will not have excess energy, but remember the photography session will also be tiring for your dog as they will naturally be stimulated by the new environment and the additional attention

  • Clean collar or harness (if you want to have this in photographs – we can do with and without)
  • Favourite treats (we’ll chat in advance as we do have treats in the studio but I’d always suggest packing your dogs high value treats in the bag too)
  • Towels (we have ones in the studio but again can be re-assuring if you need to use to have your own)
  • Blankets or bed – again we have blankets here but for more nervous dog having something that smells familiar will help a lot
  • Toys and tricks – always brilliant to bring your dog’s favourite toys (from teddies to squeaky) we have dog toys in the studio which are loved by dogs but always lovely to see dogs interacting with their toys the recognise as that can help them relax and we can capture the photographs that are ‘so them’ We’ll also find out what tricks your dog knows as they love showing how clever they are (and we love seeing that!)
  • Snacks for you (we can provide tea and coffee by the bucketload but feel free to bring your favourites bites to eat)
  • A spare top for you in case of paws or over-enthusiastic doggy kisses

We have lots of top tips for this that don’t need to involve shopping (unless you’re looking for a good excuse to get something new)
What you should wear depends a lot on what you love as a family and where in your home you’re going to display your photographs. And to a certain extent the colour of your dog. We’ll have a chat with you in advance and can help guide you on this.

To make it easy stick to a small palette. Maybe just two or three different colours. Include texture rather than busy patterns. These neutrals keep attention where it belongs—on your dog, while still making your skin tones look warm and glowing.

We have a few styling boards that we’ll send to you in advance to help you prepare.

Yes absolutely. It is lovely for dogs to have some of their own things. If you’re brining favourite toys I’d suggest keeping them in the bag and we can pull them out at points during a session. Often your dog will respond very positively to a known toy (sound) and play positively.

This is a super important question and you should always ask it. Firstly, we are always dog-led so we will be guided by you and your dog. Years of experience with dogs, of different dispositions, has taught me lots of patience and simple ways to help reassure them. From keeping the temperature optimum to letting them have space to play (and to chill) and of course plenty of water, we’ll help your dog (and you) relax.

If you’re at all worried about this then we’d suggest arranging a time ahead of your photography experience to introduce your dog to the studio environment. This will help know what suits your dog best so when we plan their photography experience everything is in place to help them settle.

Dog Photography experiences are £250 which includes a discovery call, the photography experience itself and £100 to put towards whichever product you like. Our mounted prints start at £200 and we have wall art from £800. We’ll find out in advance at your discovery call what you’d like and where in your home you’d like to display your photographs.

Yes we include social media files included of whichever products you choose and if you choose one of our wall art collections you also have the option to upgrade to high resolution images. Remember we’re all about printed photographed first and foremost as that’s our skill set: from taking the photographs to editing them we understand print and have sourced some of the best products to display your photographs.

Yes we do so please just ask.

To book your session you need to pay your £250 fee.

We understand things happen and dogs’ health is our number one priority. All we ask is that you give us as much notice as possible before re-scheduling. If you need to re-schedule more than once there may be an admin fee.

A great question and one you should ask. It’s super important for you to find a dog photographer you can trust as it’s not something all photographers are comfortable with. We understand that. It’s also important for us to connect with our clients so we can tell their story in an authentic way. With dog photography trust is key. You should choose a photographer who you connect with in style, but also in personality. At Blue Sky Photography we are patient and skilled at working with dogs of all temperaments. We’ve taken time to create a calm, welcoming spa-like space. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also smells great. Clients love the flow our studio gives and that helps them relax.  Importantly we also have a window in the studio so we can always male sure it stays cooler for your dog, even in summer. We take time to make sure your dog feels safe and comfortable. Using positive reinforcement and calm, gentle instructions helps to keep everyone and encouraged. Before we start the session we’ll get your dog used to the lights and use rewards to help them feel positive in the studio. We’ll also take time to find out what textures dogs like.
