Newborn Baby Photography in Edinburgh

Forever remember the precious early days…

Timeless newborn photography in Edinburgh by Blue Sky Photography

The first two weeks of your baby’s life are the perfect time to capture images that will help you remember the arrival of your newborn little bundle forever.

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Blue Sky Photography. Our newborn photography style is beautiful, timeless images that you will make you smile (and cry) and then smile some more.

You can trust us to look after you and your new bundle with as much care and attention as if you were one of our own. Our Edinburgh photography studio will be wonderfully cosy and warm, the coffee will be flowing and the pace will be super chilled, perfect for those gorgeous, heart-melt photographs.

A framed black and white newborn photography print of a woman holding a baby hangs above a white sofa with cushions in a bright living room with a potted plant.

We believe in allowing time and space for newborn photoshoots. You will never feel rushed at our studio. Instead you’ll be welcomed with coffee, tea (or some other beverage of choice) and space to relax as we capture photographs of your new baby. We’ve got plenty od space for feeding (or sleeping) as you need with our separate viewing room should you need a private space.

Enjoy our newborn photography film below which will give you a little insight into the Blue Sky Photography newborn style and approach.

A man and a woman sit on a sofa; the woman cradles a baby in her arms. All three face forward, appearing relaxed. The black and white scene captures a serene moment perfect for newborn photography.

Book a Discovery Call

A relaxed chat (over the phone or in person if you fancy a coffee and have a window before baby arrives) where we get to know you and your family. We’ll ask a few simple questions to find about the family your new baby will arrive in, learn what you’d love from your photography experience and identify beautiful artwork that perfectly suits your family, your style, and the space in your home where you’ll enjoy displaying it every day.

02

Experience

The day of the photography experience is time for you and your new baby. The studio will be prepared for you in advance, so it’s time to slow down and let the magic happen. We’ll capture the images that matter and those perfect details that you love so much (tiny toes and hands). Because we’ve chatted in advance we’ll know (literally) what we’re shooting for so we can take the photographs we know you’ll love. You should also know there’s plenty of space for feeding/changing/snoozing. We know this is likely to be one of your first outings as a new family, so we promise to look after you.

03

Design

This is the exciting moment when you get to see the photographs you’ve imagined for the first time. We invite you back to the studio and you get to sit in our lounge and view all on the big screen. This is where you pick your photographs for the space you’ve already imagined. Because we’ve chatted in advance, we’ll have an idea of the products you love. This is all about selecting your favourite images. Important note – if you’re travelling a distance, we are happy to do this same day if it makes it easier.

04

Celebrate

You will live with artwork that celebrates your newborn child and this precious time every day. A reminder that your little one is loved unconditionally and that your family is now at the centre of your home. It’s hard to define how important this will be to you (and your child) especially as the years go on.

“ Absolutely fantastic photographer – we’ve used them twice for newborn photo shoots when our kids were just two weeks old, and they made us feel so at ease, and relaxed to feed, change, cuddle in amongst the photos. Photograph quality is fantastic, choice of framing options is brilliant, and I’ve recommended them to lots of friends or bought shoots as gifts for other new parents. Niels & Alie make you feel so welcome, wouldn’t use any other photographer.

It includes:

  • A chat to find out a bit more about you and your brand new, or growing, family and also what you’d love from your photoshoot
  • Your newborn photography studio session (which you should schedule for a good couple of hours as we are relaxed and baby-led in our approach), an exclusive viewing and design consultation after your shoot.

Drop us a line if you’ve any questions or if we can pencil in a date for your newborn photo shoot with us.

Newborn photography frequently asked questions

For that sleepy look we’d suggest within the first 2 weeks as at this stage they’re super tiny and often still in a ‘tucked up’ position. However, at Blue Sky Photography we are relaxed as many of our clients’ favourite newborn photographs are of baby with their eyes open, a slight smile, or even eye contact with a parent, so we say anything within the first 6 weeks is good for us. But please get in touch and we can have a chat as each baby is different and a lot is dependent on what weight baby was at birth, as well as Mum’s recovery.

Please get in touch towards the end of your pregnancy. We are a small studio and can only take on a limited number of bookings. If Blue Sky Photography is the one for you and your family please book in 36 weeks onward and we’ll make sure there’s a slot reserved for you and baby.

If you’ve already booked in you are our priority so we will re-schedule with you. It’s not uncommon to re-schedule newborn photography experiences as babies don’t often arrive exactly as planned.

We would always say allow 2-3 hours. This allows time for feeding and changing. We have plenty of space in the Blue Sky Photography studio. You can relax and feed with baby in our lounge and we can spoil you with a top-notch coffee or cup of tea (added bonus of coming to the studio is that we take our coffee and tea game very seriously)

Top tip would always be to leave everything out the night before (for you and for baby and for the rest of the family if you’re brining siblings)
If you’re travelling a distance, we can plan for baby to have some awake time when you arrive
Here’s a quick checklist that might help:
Nappies and wipes
Two muslins/burp cloths
Extra milk (if bottle feeding) or your usual nursing supplies
An extra outfit for baby in case of nappy incidents
Snacks for you (we can provide tea and coffee by the bucketload but feel free to bring your favourites bites to eat)
A spare top for you and your partner in case of leaks
Dummy or Pacifier (I prefer the American word for this) even if baby doesn’t usually need one. We know this one can be controversial and it’s always up to individual parents, but it can be useful when you know baby isn’t hungry, for brief soothing between setups.

We have lots of top tips for this that don’t need to involve shopping (unless you’re looking for a good excuse to get something new)
What you should wear depends a lot on what you love as a family and where in your home you’re going to display your photographs. We’ll have a chat with you in advance and can help guide you on this.

To make it easy stick to a small palette. Maybe just two or three different colours. Include texture rather than busy patterns. These neutrals keep attention where it belongs—on baby, while still making your skin tones look warm and glowing.

Keep your partner’s outfit simple. Something like a solid collared shirt, sweater or simple pullover with chinos or dark jeans. No logos or neon.

Siblings should be in breathable layers. Soft knits, simple dresses, or tees and soft dungarees or leggings. We’ll always aim to photograph siblings first so they can relax. Sometimes siblings may take a little longer to warm up so we’ll just adapt to that and go at their pace.

We have a few styling boards that we’ll send to you in advance to help you prepare

Yes absolutely. We understand that some blankets are super special, particularly if they’ve been made by Grandma or handed down generations. And the same goes for inherited teddy bears. If you have any particular props you’d like us to include – outfits, hairbands – just let us know in advance so we can incorporate them into your experience in a natural way as we always want babies to look natural rather and be comfortable.

This is a super important question and you should always ask it. Firstly, we are always baby-led so will settle baby the way they like to be settled. Years of experience (both as a mother and a photographer) has taught me lots of patience and simple ways to help baby settle. Parents are always present and no baby is ever left unattended. There will be no odd poses as that’s not our style. If it’s not natural and comfy for baby then we don’t do it – it’s that simple.

No I’m afraid that’s not our style. At Blue Sky Photography it’s timeless over trendy as we want your photographs to look good on the wall even at your child’s 21st. Some composite poses that might look good now, might not stand the test of time.

Most babies will have awake and sleeping time allowing us to capture both. A few babies don’t sleep at all. That’s ok. We’re more interested in baby being settled than asleep. But if you’re really keen on sleeping photographs then we have plenty of ways to help baby sleep. Number one on that is how cosy and relaxed our studio space is. Sometimes even parents may want to have some shut eye.

Newborn Photography experiences are £250 which includes a discovery call, the photography experience itself and £100 to put towards whichever product you like. Our mounted prints start at £200 and we have bundles available from £800. We’ll find out in advance at your discovery call what you’d like and where in your home you’d like to display your photographs.

Yes we include social media files included of whichever products you choose and if you choose one of our wall art collections you also have the option to upgrade to high resolution images. Remember we’re all about printed photographed first and foremost as that’s our skill set – from taking the photographs to editing them we understand print and have sourced some of the best products to display your photographs.

Yes we do so please just ask.

To book your session you need to pay your £250 fee.

We understand things happen in families and babies’ and parents’ health is our number one priority. All we ask is that you give us as much notice as possible before re-scheduling. If you need to re-schedule more than once there may be an admin fee.

A great question and one you should ask. It’s super important for you to find a newborn photographer you can trust as it’s a vulnerable time for you all. We understand that. It’s also important for us to connect with our clients so we can tell their story in an authentic way. With newborn photography trust is key. You should choose a photographer who you connect with in style, but also in personality. At Blue Sky Photography we are patient and skilled at working with babies. We’ve taken time to create a calm, welcoming spa-like space. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also smells great. Clients love the flow our studio gives and that helps them relax. We take time to make sure your family feels safe and comfortable. We use positive reinforcement and calm, gentle instructions to help everyone feel happy. As a mother I’m also thinking of how the parents feel as much as the babies.
